Low Back Pain

Low back pain is something almost everyone will suffer from at a point in their lives. It will occur in 90% of individuals at a point in life. Most low back pain is usually either due:
  • Sprain of a Lumbar Facet Joint
  • Sprain of the Vertebral Discs (Tissue Between Vertebra)
  • Other Causes (Trauma, Disease, etc.)
Spain to a lumbar facet joint usually occurs after an awkward bend or tilt when picking up a heavy object. Symptoms usually include pain when extending the low back, muscle spasms and dull aching discomfort.  Irritation or sprain to a vertebral disc usually occurs after repetitive activity to the low back, or sitting for long periods.  This can result in pain with flexing the low back, and in worst case scenario 'sciatic' pain down the leg.

Having one of our therapists evaluate your low back pain is extremely important for a successful outcome. These different types of low back pain have different exercises, stretches and treatments. By doing unadvised exercises you may be further irritating your low back pain. Understanding your activities of daily living is also very important, as tasks like driving, sleeping and bending need to be done properly to prevent further pain.

Treatment for low back pain includes:
  • Manual Therapy (Trigger point therapy, massage therapy) - to reduce spasm and relieve tightness
  • Mobilisation and Manipulation of the Low Back - to improve mobility in specific joints
  • Exercises - to strengthen the muscles surrounding the low back, and to make sure body mechanics are good, to prevent another episode of pain
  • Taping - For support and stability
  • Modalities (Ultrasound, Electrotherapy) - to reduce pain, improve mobility while in acute pain

Evaluation is very important in order to provide an accurate diagnosis, individual-specific exercises and symptom relief. Please give us a call if you have low back pain!
