Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine, originating in China over 3,000 years ago. It involves the insertion and manipulation of very thin, metallic needles into various points (called acupoints) on the body with the goal of relieving pain and providing a therapeutic effect. Because the needles are extremely thin, there is little or no pain experienced during an acupuncture treatment. Sometimes the placement of needles may take place in conjunction with mild electrical stimulation.
The most widely accepted theory concerning how acupuncture works involves the flow of what is known as “Qi” (pronounced “Chee”) or life energy. It is thought that this Qi flows along specific pathways, called meridians, in the body and blockages of these energy routes can result in pain or illness. Inserting needles at points along these blocked meridians, it is believed, can correct the disruption of flow and restore a person to good health.
Because the stimulation of these acupoints can influence the physiological functions of the body, many diseases have been successfully treated by acupuncture. Most commonly these include low and upper back pain, neck pain and headaches, and arthritic conditions. In addition, many patients with anxiety disorders, depression, and addictions to alcohol and tobacco have experienced marked improvement through acupuncture treatments.
Treatments generally take about 20 to 30 minutes, but the length of time needles are left in the body, and the number of needles required, depends on the patient’s specific condition.
Conditions Commonly Treated by Acupuncture:
• Achilles Tendonitis
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Bell’s Palsy
• Trigeminal Neuralgia
• Headaches
• Neck Pain
• Frozen Shoulder
• Tinnitus
• Fertility
• Cessation of Smoking
• Alcohol/Drug Addiction
• Stroke
• Dysmenorrhea
• Back Pain
• Tennis Elbow
